From Board President Barry Sheff
As I look back at 2020, I can’t help but think about the challenges faced by a global pandemic and the impact on so many friends and loved ones, but it was also the Woodard & Curran Foundation’s tenth anniversary year. Our organization started the year on solid footing and steady growth made it possible to survive and thrive. Our financial capacity to do our work grew through consistent donor support and a sound investment strategy, and our governance was strengthened by the addition of five new Board members located around the U.S. Most important of all and what I’m truly proud of: we disbursed more grant money in 2020 than in any year prior and set a standard for the future.
With each year, we’ve increased our grantmaking—and the range of projects, big and small, that we support responds to the critical need for funding environmental nonprofits. Our relationship with the employee-donors of Woodard & Curran, Inc. is strong and we are particularly grateful that the firm affirmed its commitment to the Foundation by increasing its generous financial support to match Inc. employee contributions dollar-for-dollar. We remain thankful for all donors who generously offer their wealth, wisdom, and work.
On behalf of our Board, I offer my gratitude for the support the Foundation has received and the best to our grant recipients as they pursue their work. Thank you for celebrating our 10th year (2020–2021) with us - I’m excited about the next ten years and the impact we will have protecting our water and environment!

Woodard & Curran Foundation is a volunteer-led organization. In addition to their financial support, Woodard & Curran, Inc. employees generously donate their time and wisdom to the planning and execution of Foundation operations and events. Our volunteer ranks included 16 Board members, and over 50 volunteers serving on committees, as liaisons and event organizers across the country. Given the success and magnitude of our work, we happily continue to rely on the services of our contract Foundation Administrator, Liz Leuthner, who handles a variety of tasks, including originating content for web and social media, managing our donor database, grant relations, internal and external communication, and providing Board support.
We are humbled by the dedication of all who support the Woodard & Curran Foundation and share our commitment to our water and environment. Thank you.

Impact Grants: Three 3-year $100,000 Grants
Ridge to Reefs will ameliorate the impact of cesspools on Hawaiian ecosystems.
Ridge to Reefs (maryland/hawai’i) - funding year 1 of 3
Headquartered just outside of Baltimore, MD, Ridge to Reefs’ Hawai’i project is defining a critical path for the affordable and sustainable transition of cesspools to proper treatment systems that effectively reduce contaminants and protect beaches and critical ecosystems in Hawai’i. Over three years, our Impact Grant will fund:
designing, testing, and certifying a green infrastructure wastewater treatment system that utilizes vetiver grass and biochar
pilot testing and monitoring systems in various locations in Hawai’i
collaborating locally to influence cesspool conversion policy in the state
FRIENDS OF CASCO BAY (Maine)
funding year 2 of 3
FOCB is using their grant to collect hourly data year-round throughout the bay by deploying three high-tech continuous monitoring stations in an estuarine, near-shore environment…
Change is simple (Massachusetts)

CiS is building a one-of-a-kind Mobile Sustainability & Climate Innovation Learning Lab trailer that will visit schools in the Greater Boston area and educate children on environmental topics

In 2020, employee-donors of Woodard & Curran, Inc. nominated close to thirty environmental nonprofits for $10,000 grants - unbeknownst to the organizations themselves. In December 2020, the Foundation announced the winners of ten $10,000 Giving While Living Grants. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the donors who make our Giving While Living Grants Program possible.
Environmental Justice Grant: One $10,000 Grant
Blue Sky Fund (virginia)
In honor of our 10th anniversary and to support the hope and hard work for racial and environmental equality, in June 2020 we named Blue Sky Fund as the recipient of a special $10,000 Environmental Justice Grant.
Blue Sky Fund, in Richmond, VA, is a youth development nonprofit whose mission is to provide transformational experiences for urban youth through outdoor education.

CHANGE IN TOTAL ASSETS: $141,000
The balance sheet at the end of 2020 remained healthy with assets totaling $826K including investments of $765K. The wisdom of the Foundation Board to maintain a conservative investment strategy, with guidance from Starboard Advisors of Portland, ME, allowed us to weather the uncertainties of 2020.

The Foundation’s financial support is primarily donations from Woodard & Curran, Inc. employees. In 2020, over 450 employees pledged to give $111,000 during 2021. Woodard & Curran, Inc. generously matched employee pledges with an additional $111,000. Given solid net assets and the success of its outreach campaign, the Board voted to disburse $210,000 in grants in 2020.
