Impact Grant
Ridge to Reefs
3-year $100,000 impact grant (2020-2023)
RIDGE TO REEFS
Reversing the Impact of Cesspools on Hawaiian Ecosystems
The Foundation is proud to support this important project by Ridge to Reefs. Headquartered just outside of Baltimore, MD, Ridge to Reefs’ Hawai’i project will define a critical path for the affordable and sustainable transition of cesspools to proper treatment systems that effectively reduce contaminants and protect beaches and critical ecosystems in Hawai’i. The $100,000 Impact Grant will go toward:
designing, testing, and certifying a green infrastructure wastewater treatment system that utilizes vetiver grass and biochar
pilot testing and monitoring several of these systems in various locations in Hawai’i
collaborating with local entities to influence cesspool conversion policy in the state
about RIdge to reefs
Mission: Ridge to Reefs works with communities to help create permanent sustainability for people and the planet.
Ridge to Reefs was formed to achieve tangible outcomes protecting and restoring ecosystems. We take a wholistic approach to watershed restoration by performing on-site environmental impact analysis, using innovative applied science and engineering techniques, and engaging local partners to create long-term resilient communities and ecosystems.
significance of impact grant project: Reversing the Impact of Cesspools on Hawaiian Ecosystems
The impact of this project would be significant, as it proposes to implement green infrastructure to solve a state-wide environmental crisis. While cesspools have recently been banned in Hawai’i, there are over 88,000 cesspools that remain, releasing over 53 million gallons of untreated sewage into the ground each day, polluting drinking water wells, streams, and the ocean, and causing adverse effects to human and environmental health. This project would remove the cost barrier for low- and middle-income homeowners to convert at a price point at or below the current $10,000 tax incentive and allow proposed conversion legislation to move forward with fewer impediments.
