Climate Change and Casco Bay:
Technology, Monitoring, and Community Engagement
Woodard & Curran Foundation is thrilled to support this exciting project by Friends of Casco Bay with our fourth Impact Grant. Friends of Casco Bay was selected from a competitive field of nearly 60 nonprofits from around the country. (The Friends were previously awarded a $2,500 Foundation Giving While Living Grant in 2017.) Headquartered in South Portland, ME, Friends of Casco Bay will use the $100,000 to:
collect hourly data year-round throughout the bay by deploying three high-tech continuous monitoring stations in an estuarine, near-shore environment,
communicate to the community about the changing conditions of the bay,
and engage the community in their work to advance policy and behavioral changes to address the impacts of climate change.
about friends of Casco bay
Mission: to improve and protect the environmental health of Casco Bay.
In 1989, concerned citizens founded Friends of Casco Bay, after a report identified the Bay as one of the most polluted regions in the nation. One of their first efforts was to launch a Water Quality Monitoring Program to assess the health of the Bay. Informed by the scientific data collected by staff and volunteers, their Baykeeping Program advocates for solutions to problems threatening our waters. Other programs include: the Casco Bay Curriculum— designed to help teachers bring the Bay into the classroom; the BayScaping Program — to reduce the amount of lawn care chemicals flowing into our waters, and their vessel Pumpout Service—to help boaters be better stewards of our environment; and numerous volunteer projects.
Using science-based community engagement effort, Friends of Casco Bay hopes to inspire residents, decision-makers, resource harvesters, and businesses to champion policies and behaviors that support clean marine water, reduce pollution, and improve the health of Casco Bay. Their efforts will include plentiful opportunities for Woodard & Curran Foundation supporters, and Woodard & Curran, Inc. staff, family, and friends to volunteer on this worthy project.
